His point was not that you couldn't produce inferior work, but that, having done so, you can always keep going. The painting may now be an awful painting, but it is not ruined. It can yet become a good painting.

I suppose you may be considering setting fire to the Mona Lisa, however.... I suppose he also meant that you can't ruin a painting with paint.
